Although there is more to SEO than just "increasing your targeted customer base", SEO adds a layer of trust to your website because searchers tends to visit the first 3 websites in any niche, they see those 3 with some kid of authority which is very hard thing to get for startup biz owners. and if it will comes by any other means then search engines it will come at a high to budget. But no one can argue with the fact that any biz needs more than just SEO!
